    What is Glycyrrhizinate?

Licorice is a perennial herbaceous plant of the Leguminosae family. It has been used for thousands of years in China, India, Japan and other Asian countries. It is now widely used in Europe and the Middle East. Glycyrrhizic acid is one of the important components of the root extract of licorice, a traditional Chinese medicine. It contains two molecules of glucuronic acid and one molecule of glycyrrhetinic acid and is water-soluble. Modern research has confirmed that glycyrrhizic acid is one of the most important active ingredients in licorice, with antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and liver-protecting effects.

    What are the benefits

The anti-inflammatory mechanism of glycyrrhizic acid is clear. It can inhibit the metabolic levels of key inflammatory response signals such as phospholipase A2/arachidonic acid (PLA2/AA), NF-κB and MAPK/AP-1 induced by inflammatory stimulation in the initial stage, inhibit the activity of inflammatory response signals related to the three inflammatory pathways, downregulate the expression of related proinflammatory cytokines in the upstream of the inflammatory pathway, including TNF-α, IL-8, IL-1β, IIL-6, related chemokines and cyclooxygenase (COX), and block the downstream of the inflammatory pathway, including the production of nitric oxide (NO), prostaglandins (PG) and reactive oxygen species (ROS).

Glycyrrhizic acid can induce the production of two enzymes and antioxidant enzymes. The former is mainly responsible for detoxification and excretion of carcinogens and toxic substances, while the latter maintains a balanced environment of free radicals/oxidants and antioxidants in the intracellular environment.

Studies have found that glycyrrhizic acid also exhibits good hepatoprotective activity in some animal models of hepatitis. In liver damage caused by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and D-galactosamine (GalN), glycyrrhizic acid can completely inhibit the increase in ALT caused by IL18. Glycyrrhizin can alleviate liver damage (histology, liver enzymes) induced by ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) of the liver microcirculation and reduce hepatocyte apoptosis by reducing changes in microcirculation and preventing endothelin interactions, thereby exerting its hepatoprotective effect.

    Applications

Glycyrrhizic acid is mainly used as a sweetener and food additive in the food industry. It is a high-sweetness, low-calorie health sweetener that can be added to food, beverages, candies, etc. as a sweetener. In addition, glycyrrhizic acid also acts as a natural pigment and can be used in yellow or brown foods and beverages.

Glycyrrhizic acid is also widely used in the cosmetics and cigarette industries. It can prevent dermatitis, dry skin, sun exposure, rashes, etc., and enhance the efficacy of other active ingredients in sun protection, whitening, and antipruritic effects. In the cigarette industry, glycyrrhizic acid can prevent smoke throat and moisturize the throat.
