What does hydroxytyrosol do for the body?

What Is Hydroxytyrosol?

Hydroxytyrosol, chemically known as 3,4-dihydroxyphenylethanol, belongs to the phenolic compounds and is widely found in the branches, leaves and fruits of plants of the genus Olive in the olive family. In olive leaves and olive oil, a small amount of hydroxytyrosol exists in free form, while most of it combines with glucose and olive acid to form oleuropein. In acidic or alkaline environments, oleuropein is easily degraded to produce hydroxytyrosol.

Hydroxytyrosol is called the "killer of free radicals", mainly due to the o-dihydroxyphenyl group in its molecular structure. It acts as a chain breaker by providing hydrogen atoms to peroxyl radicals (ROO*). In this process, hydroxytyrosol converts highly active ROO* radicals into relatively stable hydroxytyrosol* radicals, fundamentally eliminating free radicals that cause oxidative stress.

The oxygen free radical absorption capacity (ORAC) of hydroxytyrosol reaches 45,000 TE/g, which is about twice that of coenzyme Q10 and resveratrol, and is one of the most effective polyphenol antioxidants. Hydroxytyrosol is also a key mitochondrial nutrient that can promote mitochondrial generation and activate the cell phase II enzyme system, thereby improving mitochondrial function. It is well known that mitochondrial dysfunction is a hallmark of aging, and the potential of hydroxytyrosol in anti-aging makes it a rising star in the anti-aging field.

What Are The Functions Of Hydroxytyrosol?

Role in cosmetics

1.Antioxidant effect: Hydroxytyrosol has higher antioxidant and free radical scavenging abilities than some other synthetic and natural compounds. The antioxidant free radical adsorption energy value of hydroxytyrosol is more than 10 times higher than that of vitamin C and 4-6 times higher than that of anthocyanins. It can protect the skin from UV radiation, pollutants and other environmental factors, and prevent skin aging and pigmentation.

2.Anti-inflammatory effect: Inflammation is another important factor leading to skin pigmentation. Long-term inflammatory response can lead to damage and death of skin cells, which in turn promotes the production of melanin. Hydroxytyrosol can improve skin pigmentation by inhibiting the production and release of inflammatory factors and reducing the damage of inflammatory response to the skin. It can soothe sensitive skin, reduce redness and irritation, and promote skin repair and regeneration.

3.Moisturizing effect: Hydroxytyrosol has good moisturizing ability, which can lock the skin's moisture, increase the skin's water content, and improve the skin's water-oil balance. It can reduce skin dryness, roughness and desquamation, making the skin softer and smoother.

4.Inhibit melanin production: Hydroxytyrosol can inhibit the activity of tyrosinase and reduce the production of melanin. Hydroxytyrosol can also affect the synthesis and distribution of melanin by regulating the signal transduction pathway of melanocytes. Therefore, it is widely used in skin care products for whitening and spot-lightening functions, effectively reducing pigmentation and spots and brightening the skin.

5.Promote collagen synthesis: Hydroxytyrosol can stimulate the synthesis of collagen in the skin and increase the elasticity and firmness of the skin. It can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, and enhance the youthfulness and smoothness of the skin.

6.Antibacterial effect: Hydroxytyrosol has certain antibacterial activity, which can inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi and reduce skin infection and inflammation. It can prevent the occurrence of acne and other skin problems and keep the skin clean and healthy.

Can hydroxytyrosol be safely "eaten"? The answer is yes.

The safety of hydroxytyrosol has been recognized by authoritative organizations. In 2017, the European Commission authorized the launch of hydroxytyrosol as a new food ingredient in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 258/97, which can be used in fish oil, vegetable oil and margarine. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has also given hydroxytyrosol the "Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS)" certification, which can be used as an antioxidant in baked products, beverages, yogurt, oils, chewing gum, condiments and other foods. In the current market, there are many products with hydroxytyrosol as the main ingredient, such as oral capsules containing hydroxytyrosol, which can activate mitochondria, fight free radicals, delay aging, promote collagen, improve skin condition, maintain stomach and liver health, and enhance body defense. Facial essence containing hydroxytyrosol can resist oxidation, repair skin oxidative damage, protect against UVA, fade fine lines, tighten pores, brighten skin tone, and keep skin young. Judging from the reviews of consumers on major platforms, hydroxytyrosol has brought real improvements to the majority of "night owls" and "office workers" who have health problems. It is also widely praised and sought after by women and people who care for their health. It is a well-deserved antioxidant "powerhouse".
